Shirts are recorded to be worn back to ancient Egypt's 18th dynasty. At that time, they were much simpler. You can imagine a rectangular piece of fabric, folded in half the long way. At the fold, there was a hole for the head. The sides were sewn together, leaving an opening at the top of each side for the arms.
